Our client, a Calgary based real estate development company, is currently seeking a Controller to join their team. Reporting to the Division Controller, you will perform full-cycle reporting and supervise the accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll functions. As a member of the management team, you will actively participate in strategic planning and on-going business decisions.

Responsibilities

The Regional Controller will have overall responsibility for the planning, recording and reporting of regional financial information and the control of financial transactions for the Calgary region. Within this performance-oriented culture, the Regional Controller will ensure that all financial and accounting policies are consistently and accurately implemented and that all reporting is accurate and completed in a timely manner.

Key areas of responsibility include:
• Lead the accounting team in the preparation of monthly journal entries, accruals, GL closing, balance sheet reconciliations and other month/quarter/year activities for all of the region’s entities;
• Ensure that accurate and timely records are maintained that conform to generally accepted accounting standards and methods;
• Prepare monthly reports for management;
• Participate in the preparation of the Regional Budgets, Profit Plans, Cash Flows, Strategic Plans and Cost Estimates;
• Interpret and review financial and operational results with Regional Vice President and report on variances as required;
• Prepare external financial statements in accordance with ASPE;
• Liaise with external auditors during the year end audit process for the Region and initiate improvements to procedures;
• Prepare year-end tax information and documentation for external tax accountants;
• Co-ordinate, advise on and review legal documentation with respect to sales; transfers, agreements, mortgages, and letters of credit;
• Coaching and providing timely feedback to direct reports to aide in their success.

Requirements

• Undergraduate degree in Accounting, Finance or Commerce;
• Chartered Professional Accountant designation
• A minimum of 7-10 years of post-designation accounting experience, ideally within the real estate/land development industry; manufacturing/construction nice to have
• Previous operational controller experience considered an asset
• Thorough and comprehensive knowledge and understanding of GAAP/ASPE, financial reporting, budgeting, internal controls, accounting policies and procedures, and tax;
• Experience working with ERP systems, ideally with JD Edwards
